European Parliament Agenda: a week full of visits and international negotiations

US/home affairs. A Civil Liberties Committee delegation will go to Washington DC to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between EU agencies, such as Europol, and US counterparts, for instance the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in areas such as combating organised crime, terrorism and cybercrime, and protecting children online. MEPs will also discuss recent developments in personal data protection and possible ways to guarantee full visa reciprocity between the EU and the US (Monday to Thursday).

Canada/strategic partnership. A delegation from the Foreign Affairs Committee will be in Ottawa and Toronto to discuss how to further strengthen the strategic partnership with Canada. The focus will be on how best to address global challenges together, including the war in Ukraine, as well as on the situation in the Middle East, China’s growing influence, and geopolitical competition in the Arctic (Monday to Friday).

Canada/energy and research. MEPs from the Industry, Research and Energy Committee will be travelling to Toronto too, to discuss nuclear energy, research, innovation, and EU-Canada cooperation in these fields, with a particular emphasis on small modular reactors, advanced nuclear technologies, and energy transition strategies (Tuesday to Thursday).

Greenland/foreign interference. A delegation from the Security and Defence Committee will travel to Greenland to assess the changing geopolitical and climate realities the island is facing and how the EU can help Greenland counter foreign interference and destabilising external threats (Monday to Friday).

Greenland/fisheries. A Fisheries Committee delegation will be in Greenland to assess the socio-economic benefits of the EU-Greenland Fisheries Partnership Agreement and whether it fosters responsible fisheries management. This fisheries agreement is the EU’s second largest, and is worth over €17 million (Tuesday to Thursday).

Spain/migration. A delegation of Petitions Committee MEPs will travel to Tenerife and Gran Canaria to examine the challenges arising from the migratory pressure affecting the region. The MEPs will meet, inter alia, with national and local authorities, migrant communities, and neighbouring associations. Their agenda will also include hearing about cases of unaccompanied minors and visiting temporary reception centres (Monday to Wednesday).

President’s diary. On Tuesday, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will address the event „Criminalità Nazionale e Transnazionale: Strumenti e Obiettivi in Italia e in Europa” in Messina (Italy). On Wednesday, she will address the plenary session of the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels, via video.
