EPP welcomes UNM’s decision to participate in the second round of elections and take up seats in Parliament

The European People’s Party (EPP) has followed closely the first round of Georgia’s parliamentary elections, held on 8 October. Despite a less-than-desirable result for our member party, the United National Movement (UNM), EPP President Joseph DAUL has welcomed the decision by the UNM’s political council, as expressed by the Chairman of the UNM Political Council David BAKRADZE, not to boycott but rather to stand in the second round of elections and to take up seats in Parliament. UNM’s full participation in this process is the right decision in a democracy.
“I have followed with great interest the parliamentary elections in Georgia, and I respect the political choice the Georgian people have made. I am proud that UNM remains the second-strongest political force in the country, with a strong agenda for bringing Georgia closer to the EU. Following the Rose Revolution, UNM has brought democratic reforms of an unprecedented nature to the country, and I am convinced the party can do it again,” said EPP President Joseph Daul.
“I take note of the international observers’ conclusions declaring genuine the first round of elections, although observers have at the same time voiced concerns regarding violent alternations, vote counting violations and election fraud. Any such violations must be immediately investigated, wrongdoers must be brought to justice and shortcomings must be addressed based on the OSCE/ODIHR’s recommendations. I also call on the Georgian authorities to ensure peaceful elections in the second round and on all political forces to refrain from violence. Winning elections goes hand-in-hand with the obligation to respect all democratic rules, including the rights of the opposition and the independence of justice.
The EPP is committed to a democratic, stable and prosperous Georgia. This can be achieved only with the help of UNM and its commitment to fight for media plurality, an independent justice system, the strengthening of the rule of law and ridding the country of corruption,” continued the EPP President.
“UNM, now more than ever, is becoming a vital element for Georgia’s pluralism and democracy and must remain a strong political force to ensure the system of checks and balances. The EPP continues to fully support UNM and its candidates in the second round of these parliamentary elections. For the future of Georgia and its European path, a viable, and united, UNM will be decisive,” concluded the EPP President.
