The European People’s Party (EPP) President Joseph Daul made the following statement on the latest developments in Poland:
“We follow the latest political developments in Poland with great concern. We recall that press freedom and strict abidance by the rule of law are among the founding principles of the European Union. By contrast, media restrictions, violation of the rights of opposition parties and unjustified, excessive use of force against public protests are the trademarks of authoritarian governance.
We call upon the European institutions to continue their efforts to monitor the situation in Poland. We also encourage the European Commission to actively pursue the Rule of Law procedure.
In this crucial time for the proud nation of Poland, the EPP extends its full support to the Civic Platform (Platforma Obywatelska) and the Polish People’s Party (Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe), members of our political family.”
